Londoner Annie Risner Supporting Education Settings in the Charge for Climate Action

The Climate Ambassadors scheme, a national initiative empowering young people to tackle climate change, has nine regional hubs across England. Leading the London hub is Annie Risner, a true Londoner with a diverse background and a deep-rooted passion for community engagement and creative expression.

Annie’s journey, from growing up in Hackney and Kent to living in five different countries, has instilled in her a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of people and the environment. Her experiences working with various community projects, including the British Red Cross and the London Early Years Foundation, have equipped her with a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of London’s diverse communities.

“London is just a hub of activity in this area,” Annie says. “There are so many schools and so many organisations and so many local authorities that are doing so much work on this already and incredible work within London.”

Annie’s passion for the environment is evident in her hobbies, which include aerial hoop and calisthenics, activities she discovered during the COVID-19 lockdown as a way to stay active and connected to nature. Her love for the outdoors and her appreciation for the natural world drive her commitment to climate action.

As the regional hub lead for London, Annie is focused on building on the existing expertise and initiatives within the city. She is particularly excited about piloting projects that empower early years settings and schools to take ownership of their climate action plans.

“We really want to support that and support you in coming into schools and doing that,” she says. “And so that’s something that I’m really excited about and I really want to highlight ways that we can creatively bring this into this process.”

Annie is also keen on fostering collaboration between schools, local authorities, and community organisations. She believes that by working together, they can create a powerful network of individuals dedicated to climate action across London.

With Annie’s leadership and the support of the Climate Ambassadors scheme, young people in London are being empowered to take action on climate change and create a more sustainable future for their city.
