The final episode of Season 4 of the Coffee & Geography podcast shone a spotlight on Emma Baines, the Climate Ambassadors regional hub manager for the West Midlands.
A Passion for Education and the Environment
Emma’s journey is a testament to her passion for education and the environment. With a background in education, she has always been keen on making a difference in young people’s lives. Travels and Perspectives
Emma’s work has taken her to far-flung corners of the world, including Tanzania and Peru. These travels have not only broadened her horizons but also deepened her understanding of global issues. She noted that English, particularly American English, is often seen as a ticket to better opportunities. However, she also observed that the imposition of English in some settings can be problematic.
Emma reflects, “English was almost had, like a monetary value that that’s why they were learning it. But then at the same time in the schools, the teachers didn’t necessarily know how to how to teach it.”
Education and Outreach
Emma talked about her work with the UniConnect programme, where she focused on helping disadvantaged young people access further and higher education. She discussed the challenges faced by schools, particularly in areas of deprivation, and the importance of providing support to these education settings.
The Climate Ambassadors Scheme
As the regional hub manager for the West Midlands, Emma plays a crucial role in the Climate Ambassadors Scheme. This initiative aims to educate and empower individuals to take action against climate change. Emma’s work in the region has been instrumental in promoting the scheme and engaging local communities in the fight against climate change.
Emma expresses her hopes for the Climate Ambassadors Scheme in the West Midlands, “I really, really want to see these settings in these areas that are already struggling… to receive this support from climate ambassadors.”
Despite her global experiences, Emma remains deeply connected to her roots in Stoke-on-Trent. Her work in the West Midlands is a reflection of her commitment to supporting education settings in areas of deprivation. She believes in the power of local communities to bring about change and is dedicated to empowering them through education.
