The Climate Ambassadors scheme is a national initiative aimed at empowering young people to take action on climate change. The scheme has nine regional hubs across England, each led by a dedicated team of experts. In the North East, the hub is led by Stephen Blenkinsop, a Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University with a passion for tea and a lifelong love of Doctor Who.
A native of Middlesbrough, Stephen’s experiences growing up in the 1980s during a time of significant economic change have shaped his commitment to social justice and his belief in the power of education to drive positive change. His academic journey, which includes a PhD at the Climatic Research Unit, has equipped him with the expertise to tackle the complex challenges of climate change.
Stephen is not just a climate expert; he’s also a tea enthusiast with a penchant for Lapsang Souchong, a smoky tea that he enjoys outdoors due to its strong aroma. And when he’s not working on climate action plans or sipping tea, he can be found indulging in his lifelong passion for Doctor Who, with a particular fondness for the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.
As the regional hub lead for the North East, Stephen is committed to engaging with schools and communities across the region, from the Scottish Borders to Teesside, to develop climate action plans and make a real difference. He recognizes the unique challenges faced by the North East, including its geographical spread and the need to reach underserved communities.
“It’s really important that we reach out to some of these other schools that we historically haven’t talked to and communicated with about climate change,” he says.
Stephen is also excited about the potential for collaboration with other regional hubs and the opportunity to learn from their diverse experiences and expertise. He believes that by working together, the hubs can create a powerful network of climate champions across England.

With Stephen’s leadership and the support of the Climate Ambassadors scheme, young people in the North East are being empowered to take action on climate change and create a more sustainable future for their region.
